Julien Moulin is a French-American multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans photography, digital collage, and drawing. Influenced by the surrealists’ exquisite corpse, John Baldessari’s conceptual wit, and Basquiat’s symbolic language, Moulin explores, through visual sampling, the interplay of memory and perceptions of reality, creating works that oscillate between the familiar and the uncanny.

Moulin’s practice weaves together diverse media, where a bold sense of color and composition transforms spatial and temporal experiences into striking visual narratives. His series “Terra Incognita” (2018), which mixes fragments of maps and geological data, won the jury prize and critical acclaim at the annual Rencontres art festival in Saint-Céneri, France. In “Ripped” (2019), Moulin documents a day of meanderings through Budapest with photographs of torn posters and graffiti that visually maps a journey through space and time. With “Heads” (2021), Moulin reimagines Mathew Brady’s daguerreotype portraits, delving into identity and history.

Born in 1970 in Nanterre, France, and trained at École Estienne in Paris, Moulin has lived in Asia, Europe, and North America and currently resides in Washington, DC.
