Parallel Realities explores the American West, as captured through Moulin’s camera during a four-month cross-country trip. He deconstructed and rearranged images into strata, where the interplay of light, color, and textures creates otherworldly scenes. Each piece acts as a portal, excavating memory and impressions, merging fragments of time and space to conjure a parallel reality.
The series draws inspiration from artists encountered on this journey, including the Basquiat Made on Market Street exhibition at Gagosian, Los Angeles, and the evocative works of T.C. Cannon and Fritz Scholder, whose bold explorations of identity, cultural memory, and the complexities of Native American representation resonated deeply for Moulin. He also incorporates photocroms of Indian chiefs attributed to William Henry Jackson—an iconic 19th-century American photographer known for his pioneering images of the American West while working for the Detroit Publishing Company.
These influences, combined with the landscapes Moulin traversed, shaped the project’s fusion of visual deconstruction and storytelling, offering a layered perspective on the American West as both a physical and imaginative terrain.
